Vision and Aims

Oxclose Primary Academy believes that physical education is an essential part of a child’s educational development. Our vision for the teaching PE is to provide a balanced program offering a variety of activities to enhance skills in physical education as well as fostering a life-long love of physical exercise, sport or physical fitness. Positive participation in physical education will enable pupils at our school to build self-esteem, respect, physical development, team work, and positive attitudes in P.E. and across their educational experience. Pupils will learn to evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses as well as their peers. At Oxclose Primary Academy pupils are made fully aware of the benefits of physical activity to their overall health including mental health.

Our vision is to inspire EVERY pupil to be passionate about Physical Education and Sport, while bringing PE to the heart of the school.

  • To equip every pupil with the key physical and social skills that can be facilitated through to PE and sport
  •  To enable every pupil to progress with confidence and competence in PE and sport -throughout their school journey and beyond
  •  To embed key sporting values that can be applied positively in everyday life.
  • To inspire pupils to live a healthy and active lifestyle into adulthood, using PE and sports to facilitate this
  • To develop the physical and mental wellbeing of every pupil and ensure it is central to their physical education journey

Our Mission is:

  • For our lessons to take each pupil on an exciting and progressive learning journey from Early Years through to KS2, ensuring mastery of key skills.
  • For all lessons to be inclusive and fully supportive, ensuring that ‘PE is for everyone!’
  • For pupils to actively learn and live important values, all through the power of PE and sport.
  • We want to inspire and challenge ALL pupils, whatever their abilities.
  •  We aim to develop confident young leaders through our PE lessons and leadership programmes such as Playground Buddies and Young Sports Leaders.
  •  We aim to educate pupils about physical and mental well-being and to inform as to the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • We aim to further develop and nurture strong school-club and competitive links with the local partnership organisations, providing our pupils with access to a support structure to pursue their chosen sports and activities beyond school.
  •  To support and complement cross curricular subject areas through our physical, fun and engaging lessons.

Sequencing Rationale

Pupils at Oxclose Primary Academy receive an inclusive, broad and balanced programme of PE.  Pupils participate in PE lessons devised from the Primary PE Planning online platform. We have specially selected SOW and lessons to create the bespoke school PE Long Term Plan.

The PE Long Term Plan allows for key strands of the PE curriculum to move through each year group building on the skills that have been learnt prior and fully adheres to all National Curriculum requirements.

They allow for a consistent delivery and structure across the school.  The planning has been developed so that progression is built into the scheme (an exciting learning journey from Early Years through to KS2). This ensures our pupils are increasingly challenged, inspired and motivated in ALL PE lessons.  The curriculum provides a foundation from Early Years to Key 2 for an ongoing development of Physical Literacy.

Extraordinary Opportunities

  • Annual Health and Happiness Week
  • Links to SAFC through the Foundation of Light, including weekly session for SEND and support staff and a range of visits into school to work with children.
  • In addition to curriculum sport, we have an extensive list of extra-curricular sports, which are run after school. Through these clubs children can further develop their skills in a range of sports such as netball, football, fitness, multisport/basic skills and yoga.
  • Local partnership and community-based organisations links. We have linked with North east Skipping School and the Sunderland Tennis Centre.

Implementation

Pupils at Oxclose Primary Academy participate in PE lessons devised from the Primary PE Planning online Platform. Our pupils receive an inclusive, broad and balanced programme of PE.  We following Long Term, Medium Term and detailed Short Term PE planning and pupils have access to knowledge organisers and progression documents for each unit. The Long Term Plan includes suggestions of when PE learning could take place outside as we encourage outdoor learning where appropriate across the curriculum. The bespoke curriculum specialised to Oxclose Primary Academy and its pupils is mapped to ensure that our children participate in a wide range of activities and adhere to all National Curriculum requirements.

We provide opportunities for all pupils to engage in extra-curricular activities during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events outside of school. Our Key Stage 2 children have swimming lessons to enable them to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25 metres using a range of strokes. We have an Outdoor Gym which includes stationary exercise machines which have been provided to encourage children to be more active at break times and lunch times. Oxclose Primary Academy has Sports Leaders and buddies who support active sessions during lunchtime to engage children within different types of sports and general physical activity building on National Curriculum PE skills.

Assessment will take place across lessons, at the end of each unit and across the school year. We monitor the impact of our PE provision through pupil voice, annotated lesson plans, termly assessments, lesson observations and performance within local competitions.

Impact

At Oxclose Primary Academy PE is an essential part of the curriculum and through our PE lessons pupils develop their physical literacy and key skills giving them the tools to become physically confident and motor competent.  Our High-Quality PE curriculum focuses on the whole child, developing their physical, social and thinking skills. Our PE is provided in a safe and supportive environment and is vital and unique in its contribution to a child’s physical and emotional development and health and wellbeing.

We provide opportunities for the children to compete against themselves and others during PE lessons, building character and developing key values including fair play, respect, communication, collaboration, commitment, leadership and teamwork. It is our aim that all pupils will be able swim at least 25 metres using a range of stroke before the end of year 6 and have a knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.

To enable us to measure the impact, the subject leader and senior leaders will use lesson visits, work scrutinies and pupil voice activities across the year.
